During the Covid-19 pandemic, Northwell Health tasked us with transforming a neglected and outdated outdoor space at South Shore University Hospital, Entenmann Family Campus, into Heroes’ Plaza. The space now features outdoor dining, covered outdoor event/meeting space, a pollinator garden, and a memorial garden with engraved pavers and plaques. To accomplish this, existing concrete and crumbling stairs were replaced and repaired. Inadequate railings that surrounded the original, century-old hospital building (Nash), were revitalized and the space is now ADA compliant. Adding in as much flora as possible while maximizing versatility, we created distinct, separate areas, taking full advantage of the limited available space. Choosing smaller cultivars of hardy, yet colorful, flowering plants enabled the creation of vibrant and green living buffers and focal points. This is now a place where people can sit down and eat or take a well-deserved break from the rapid pace of a major hospital. It is also a place where those we have lost in the battle to save lives will be remembered.
